Benjamin Beirs is an American musician and yoga teacher who has been living in Europe since 2013. He was introduced to yoga at the age of 16 by his father, who owned a yoga studio in Philadelphia. Ben studied classical guitar at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, and lived there for 11 years while completing 3 degrees in music. As he studied, toured, and took part in guitar competitions, he always found time to meet, learn from, and practice with many yoga and meditation teachers. He met his mentor and spiritual guide, Lama Surya Das, the best-selling author of “Awakening the Buddha Within,” at Omega Institute in 2005 and regularly studies with him during his silent, intensive meditation retreats held at the Garrison Institute in New York state.
After completing his degrees in Baltimore, Ben moved to Paris in 2013 to further pursue his music career and study with renowned guitar pedagogue Judicael Perroy. He left behind a comfortable life in Baltimore and quickly struggled to integrate himself into Parisian daily life. Yet in leaving behind the comforts of his native language and culture, as well as the 11 years of career momentum, he was able to discover more about himself than ever before, including that his yoga and meditation practice were more important to his well-being and happiness than he had ever previously imagined.
This led him to deepen his commitment to yoga through his first 200-hour teacher training, which he completed in July 2014 at the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina, USA. He has been teaching group classes in Paris since 2015 and has found it to be a wonderful complement to his spiritual practice and his creative path as a musician. Wishing to deepen his practice and teaching skills, he returned to Omega Institute in May of 2016 where he completed a 300-hour Jivamukti teacher training.
Ben brings a candid, joyful yet clear approach to teaching, and through the influence of mentors both musical and spiritual, encourages others to integrate yoga, meditation, and creativity into their daily lives, for the benefit of one and all. In July of 2018, he left Paris to travel the USA with his girlfriend Jennifer, and together they recently moved to Berlin, where they both currently teach at Jivamukti Yoga Berlin. He also just released his newest album, “Blue Sky Dreams,” a self-produced, harmonious fusion of classical, original songs, and mantras that sends the listener on a borderless journey into the vast blue sky.
